S.M.S. Emden World Cruise 1927

Click on thumbnail for larger image.

The Reichsmarine light cruiser Emden was laid down in 1921, commissioned 1925 and used by the German Navy essentially as a training ship during the inter-war years, the first World cruise taking place from November 1926 to March 1928 under the command of Captain Richard Förster. Emden was the first major German warship built after World War One and suffered from the constraints imposed by the Treaty of Versailles and the Naval Inter-Allied Commission of Control. However, the navy was able to incorporate the recent technology of electric welding and an efficient propulsion system during construction. Firepower was limited to six 15cm single turret guns taken from stock whilst other navies were fitting modern twin turrets. These photographs come from an album of 162 photographs showing the working-up of the ship and crew leading to the departure from Wilhelmshaven on 14th November 1926. The two-year cruise is illustrated with photographs from the ports of call during the East to West voyage with most photographs annotated. Note numbering on many photographs and the different format as if the photographs came from various sources, taken by crew members or commercially purchased. Most photographs have a handwritten text on the verso often repeating what is given in the typed note. All comments are in German. This album does not cover the entire cruise and stops after the stay in Valparaiso.
